Lego pyramid cake pictures!

  • Mar. 10th, 2009 at 3:04 PM

Well, the pics are so-so, but at least they'll give everyone an idea of what Carter's latest birthday cake looked like!

The birthday boy, blowing out his candles!

Before we cut into the cake, we counted 125 Lego bricks (cut out with a square cookie cutter, but individually trimmed, one by one) and 442 "studs" to be placed on the Legos (again, one by one.) Why am I including that piece of information? Because I want to remind myself to try to take on simpler cakes from now on! I didn't count exactly how many hours it took to bake/carve the cake, ice it, and put on all the fondant bricks/studs, but I would venture a guess of at least 8 hours.

The good news is that Carter LOVED his cake. Man, I love that kid. I would do it again for him in a heartbeat.

Awesome. Did you use all fondant for the frosting? I always think it looks pretty, but I don't like the way it tastes.

I used buttercream underneath the fondant. That way, you peel off the fondant and still have yummy "normal" cake underneath. Well, and it helps the fondant stick to the cake. But, you're not alone. A lot of people don't care for the whole fondant thing.

Sweet merciful blocks of cake! That is unbelievable. Mind-blowing. I know you'd described it a couple of times, but never did I ever expect something SO FREAKIN AWESOME! Lucky, lucky boy!

When I describe it, though, I never know if it's actually going to look that way until I get elbow deep in cake! Sometimes, the powers that be have other ideas. But, I'm glad it worked out this time!

Here from "ditto" like everybody else. I know what it is like to take on a lengthy project like yours. As a self indulgent exercise, you might want to try "Death by Chocolate" by Marcel Desaulniers. It also too 8 hours worth of prep, a pound of chocolate, and worth every second of putting it together.

What you need for cakes like that is a "Brick Making" party and invite friends over. You get an assembly line going. Over a glass of wine and good talk with your friends, the bricks get built and you get a great evening as well.

Here from cake wrecks too...and loving your cake. My son loves it too and has asked me to make it for his upcoming birthday.

A few questions about it if that's ok?

- is each brick individually carved and iced and then put in place or is each layer carved and the bricks are iced on?

- did you buttercream all over? Did you buttercream between the layers? How long in advance of the birthday did you cook the cake?

Many thanks

It was made up of 3 layers of cake (baked in squares) that were carved up and stacked one on top of another (putting buttercream between each layer.) Then, within each layer, I carved out two courses of Lego blocks (the stair step.) Then, I covered the entire cake in a crumbcoat of buttercream. At that point, I used rolled fondant, cutting a square, folding it over the edge, making each brick one by one. At the very end, I applied tiny circles of fondant to represent the Lego "studs".

I made the cake the day before his party. That way, if I had a cake disaster of some sort, I had overnight to fix it!

Does that help? :)
